NEW AWARD TO BE OFFERED TO RYERSON STUDENTS WITH AN EYE FOR REAL ESTATE

April 11, 2012 – This coming fall Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM) students with a bright future in the real estate world will have a student financial award just for them thanks to the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA). The first of its kind at TRSM it will be open to top students who have completed the Real Estate Finance course (FIN707). Through OREA’s donation the student who achieves the highest level of excellence in FIN707 will be recognized at the annual School of Business Management awards ceremony.

Dr. Cynthia Holmes, Associate Professor in Finance, had this to say about the new award, “I am very excited that our best and brightest students will have the opportunity to be recognized in this way, and I know they will be so appreciative of the support from Industry professionals. There was high demand for this course and I am pleased that OREA chose to show its commitment to real estate education through support of our students.”

“The OREA Real Estate College has been a leader in shaping the future of real estate career education in Ontario. Its core purpose of providing the best career education in the public interest for real estate professionals is strengthened with the establishment of a scholarship at Ryerson University. We can think of no better way to demonstrate our culture of excellence than to be linked with the Ted Rogers School of Management and its academic program”, said Ozzie Logozzo, Executive Director of the OREA Real Estate College at OREA.

OREA’s gift also reflects the growing interest in the field of real estate here at the Ted Rogers School of Management. Our own Real Estate Ryerson club is a student run group that attracts students from across campus who are interesting in exploring the industry as a career option and currently has over 450 members.

We are grateful to OREA for this gift and look forward to building a strong relationship with them as we build out our expertise at the university level for the real estate sector.

During the meeting, the Minister and senior executives from the CLMR and Ryerson discussed how the Centre and the Government of Canada can encourage relationship-building and understanding in today’s challenging economy.

“Our government remains focused on stimulating the Canadian economy by creating and maintaining jobs,” said Minister Raitt. “In this economically fragile period, strong labour–management relations are of the utmost importance.”

The Centre for Labour Management Relations works to improve Canadian labour–management relations by funding ground-breaking research; hosting public lecture series; placing students in internships; and holding symposia and conferences on topics relevant to improving the workplace. During her visit, the Minister also had the opportunity to review the CLMR website, www.ryerson.ca/clmr, a one-stop web- based labour portal.

“I would like to commend the Centre for Labour Management Relations and the Ryerson/Ted Rogers School of Management for their commitment to labour–management relations initiatives,” said Minister Raitt.

The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code. These laws cover industrial relations; health and safety; and employment standards, and apply to federally regulated workers and employers.

Students from the Ted Rogers School of Management had the opportunity to mingle with executives from the top CA firms at a networking event on September 14.

Representatives from KPMG, Pricewaterhouse Cooper, Deloitte and Ernst & Young attended the event.

Nicole Ducommun, Manager of Employment Partnerships, said, “The goal for organizing events like this is to connect our students with industry executives, and to provide them with the opportunity to network with industry people in order to learn about the work life after graduation.”

Ducommon also noted that the Ted Rogers School of Management tries to provide as many networking opportunities as possible to students. “At the end of the day, students are here to get a great education which will eventually lead them to a great career,” she said.

The event was timed to coincide with the September to October recruiting season for accounting students.

150 students attended the event, joining the 20 representatives from the four companies.

Wayne McFarlane, Executive in Residence, made sure the students were prepared to meet their companions for the evening. He conducted three coaching sessions before the event, and made sure students were prepared, from having conversation topics picked to making sure the boys had their shoes shined.

“We want to raise the brand,” said McFarlane. “We want to show that Ted Rogers School of Management grads are competition for other university students in Canada.”

McFarlane also opened the evening with a speech detailing Ryerson’s success stories, from the Maple Leaf Gardens project to the success of alumni, many of whom were there as representatives from the firms.

McFarlane said his goal in working with students was to raise their self-confidence. After working with him, McFarlane said, “they go flying out the door thinking they’re on top of the world…I’m in the business of helping people develop their self-confidence. It’s something a lot of schools don’t think to address.”

Students appreciated his efforts. Nancy Sandu, a third-year Business Management student, said, “I think that this event was very beneficial for students because it allowed them to learn more about the big four firms and the Chartered Accountant designation. It was also great to see Ryerson Alumni now working at the big four firms come back and share their experiences with students.”

The Royal Bank of Canada has named Retail Management student Naila Abbasova as the recipient of one of six $10,000 Scholarship Awards for Undergraduates.

Each year, RBC awards its scholarships to students who share their passion to succeed and thoughts on leadership. Through an essay based awards submission, Abbasova impressed RBC with her inspiring story of achieving excellence in her education when she immigrated to Canada.

Naila moved only five years ago, and immediately noticed her ability of easily adapting to a new culture and way of life, inspiring other immigrants to come to Canada. Naila’s positive attitude and passion to succeed in all she does not only helped her to win this award, but also inspire her fellow Ryerson peers.

“In everything that I do I praise people and inspire them with a realization of their hidden possibilities, give honest and sincere opinions and always try to radiate positive energy. My goal in life is to inspire people and make them believe that anything is possible if one has passion and determination to work hard, especially when you live in such an empowering country as Canada,” Abbasova wrote in her award-winning essay.

“I feel extremely proud and lucky to have won this scholarship as it will enable me to strive to new academic and personal heights, ultimately allowing me to achieve my professional goals” said Abbasova, who is also the President of the Retail Student’s Association. “RBC Scholarship for Undergraduates has proved to me once again that Canada is a country of opportunity and has reinforced not only my opinion but that of my family, that it was in fact the right move.”
